Historically, all basic mathematical concepts of control theory were first stated and developed in continuous time, and subsequently reformed for discrete time, motivated by the growing role of digital computations and computer use. Although a majority of notions and results for continuousand discrete-time systems are almost identical, these two branches of the control science have been developing in parallel, and each new result in any of them is usually explicitly duplicated in the other. This phenomenon can be partially explained by a principal difficulty of combining the simple analysis methods for each separate branch into something relatively simple, without appealing to heavy mathematical theories, such as linear operators or distributions.
